In the middle of chapter eight, the pathetic scene where Amir
just sits in the corner watching Hassan get raped by Assef. “I had final
opportunity to decide who I was going to be. I could step into that alley,
stand up for Hassan—the way he’d stood up for me all those times in the
past—and accept whatever would happen to me. Or I could run. In the end, I ran”
these lines tell us that even after Hassan being so loyal to his friend Amir,
Amir betrayed his friend and did nothing about the rape scene that had with
Hassan. He betrayed Hassan.
The second example is in chapter nine where again Amir betrays Hassan
by plotting against him out of guilt and disgust. He told his father that
Hassan sold a watch and some money. He did this to get rid of Hassan and move
on. Hassan’s presence did not let him forget the scene and kept reminding him
that he did not stand for his friend even though Hassan was always loyal to
his. As per the line “final sacrifice”, Hassan accepted that he stole the watch
and money. Hassan always proved his loyalty to Amir but Amir betrayed him all
the time.
