Introduction

The subject of the novel is loyalty and betrayal. It is a story of two friends who live in Kabul, Afghanistan. Amir is a young boy and his closest friend is Hassan, who is a son of his father’s servant. They played kite fighting together. Amir flew kites and Hassan was a “kite runner”, he would fetch the kite for Amir where ever it landed. Assef a boy with a taste for violence mocked Amir for being friends with Hassan, who belonged to a low race. He plans to attack Amir, but Hassan stands in defense for Amir.

Amir wins a local kite fight and as usual, Hassan runs for the last cut kite. Mid of his way Aseef catches him alone, beats him severely and rapes him. Amir encounters the scene but doesn’t inform anyone. Instead he plots, a scene, where he plants a watch and some money under the pillow of Hassan’s father so that his father asks them to leave because Amir’s guilty conscious did let him be at peace. When they are confronted Hassan falsely confesses and are forgiven. Later on, they leave in search of another place. After 2 decades pass away Amir comes to know that Hassan is dead and his son Sohrab needs to be rescued from the orphanage. "There is a way to be good again."

Loyalty

In chapter five, the boys were stopped while returning back to home, by Assef. He had hatred towards Hassan as he belonged to an inferior race and Assef though that the world was better without people who treat them as friends. As Assef tries to attach Amir, Hassan puts his life in danger to defend Amir. Hassan shows his love and loyalty towards his friendship and that he would never let anyone hurt Amir. Although Amir did not remain loyal to Hassan in the story, Hassan remained loyal to him throughout.

The second example of Hassan’s loyalty in the story is at the end of chapter seven. When Amir wins the kite championship, Hassan like always said that he would fetch the cut kite for him as it is like a trophy for Amir’s victory. While Hassan left to fetch the kite he was caught again by Assef who did not allow Hassan to leave with the kite. Being loyal to Amir, Hassan fought for the kite and in return got brutally beat up and then raped by Aseef.

Betrayal

In the middle of chapter eight, the pathetic scene where Amir just sits in the corner watching Hassan get raped by Assef. “I had final opportunity to decide who I was going to be. I could step into that alley, stand up for Hassan—the way he’d stood up for me all those times in the past—and accept whatever would happen to me. Or I could run. In the end, I ran” these lines tell us that even after Hassan being so loyal to his friend Amir, Amir betrayed his friend and did nothing about the rape scene that had with Hassan. He betrayed Hassan.

The second example is in chapter nine where again Amir betrays Hassan by plotting against him out of guilt and disgust. He told his father that Hassan sold a watch and some money. He did this to get rid of Hassan and move on. Hassan’s presence did not let him forget the scene and kept reminding him that he did not stand for his friend even though Hassan was always loyal to his. As per the line “final sacrifice”, Hassan accepted that he stole the watch and money. Hassan always proved his loyalty to Amir but Amir betrayed him all the time.
